Review

by Emma Shane, 15 June 2004

This is one of those Muppet compilation albums which you would have to be a very serious fan indeed, or something of a completeist when it comes to collecting recordings, to try and get it. For it is extremely hard to find, and every track on it has appeared on other Muppet recordings that are rather more available. That said this is a highly enjoyable mixture, and if you are lucky enough to find a copy, then its certainly worth having all these songs together. The album also includes one very enjoyable  Fraggle Rock song I hadn’t actually heard before,  Yes We Can (although this song will probably be familiar to anyone who collects Fraggle Rock albums. This compilation album, like all good Muppet compilations, includes a share of classic Muppet songs, such as: a version of The Muppet Show Theme, The Fraggle Rock Theme, Happy Feet, Joe Raposo’s award winning The First Time It Happens an of course one of Kermit’s two great triumphs, Paul William’s and Kenny Ascher’s terrific waltz, Rainbow Connection. The latter gets the album off to a fine start. When Jim Henson’s Kermit sings this he does it so well it’s almost too beautifully perfect for anyone else to compete with (though there are some artistes who could do it comparably, namely Steve Whitmire and Louise Gold but they are the exceptions that prove the rule). My other particular favourite number on this album, is yet another that turns up a lot of Muppet compilations, The Rhyming Song. It’s typical of the best funny songs from The Muppet Show, with Link and Fozzie Bear providing the comedy, with Scooter and Annie Sue around to keep the singing standard high. It’s also one of those numbers where you can really hear rising starlet Annie Sue’s distinctive voice (too bad she isn’t actually credited in the album’s sleeve notes). So all in all a very enjoyable album, but nothing you won’t find more easily elsewhere.
