Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Louise Gold took-over over the feature role of Baroness Bomburst, at The London Palladium, from 16 March 2004 to Sunday 4 September 2005.

Fellow actor Christopher Biggins, clearly enjoyed appearing with Louise at The London Palladium, and, as he said

“Added to which it’s a fantastic show and I’m doing it with the most fantastic actress Louise Gold who’s playing my Baroness – we’re like an old married couple. It’s fantastic.” Christopher Biggins to Tom Bowtell, THE LONDON THEATRE GUIDE

Louise herself summed up appearing in the show, with Christopher Biggins, by saying:

“It was jolly good fun. ... We just laughed and laughed for a year and a half. I hope the audience loved it too.” Louise Gold to Alex Kasriel, ENFIELD INDEPENDENT

Click here for a Review/Account of the show.

Louise Gold last appeared at The London Palladium in a big West End show sixteen years previously in Ziegfeld; Although she did appear in a one night charity gala there in 1991, Kids At Heart. Incidentally, Nicola McAuliffe who originated the role of Baroness Bomburst on stage at The London Palladium also appeared in Kids At Heart. Nearly 27 years ago Louise Gold first appeared at The London Palladium in The Royal Variety Performance (1977).

For the first three days after the big March 2004 cast change, Jeremy and Jemima were played by the first listed pair of children, but (according to Miss H K-M) the sewer kids ensemble was played by the middle listed group of children.

Between the 15 March 2004 to 13 March 2005 actor, comedian and singer Liam Mellor was working backstage on the show, he was uncredited in the theatre programmes

Of the 44 adults in the (March 2004) cast, at least seven were trained at the Arts Educational schools (2 swings, 3 Ensemble, and 2 Principals), and all but one at the London School (of those 6, 3 of them attended the school’s pupils department, and 3 went there for the 3 year Musical Theatre course).

A number of the grown-ups in the (March 2004) cast (including at least four of the principals), made their professional stage debuts as child-actors, these include: Scarlett Strallen (Jessie in Annie Get Your Gun, and various pantomimes, amongst others things), Summer Strallen (in pantomime), Tony Adams (in The RSC, played First Twin in Peter Pan at The Scala Theatre), Lionel Blair (Watch On The Rhine in the West End), and, David Henry (The Boy Prince in Kings Rhapsody in South Africa). And it might be noted that Louise Gold never appeared professionally as a child (she was too tall), she was still in her last year at school when she made her professional stage debut at the age of 17 (as Fairy Bowbells in Dick Whittington at The Malvern Festival Theatre).

Scarlett Strallen has also worked under the names Scarlett Vaincourt-Strallen, and sometimes Scarlett V. Strallen

Summer Strallen has also worked under the names Summer Vaincourt-Stallen, and sometimes Summer V. Strallen.

It seems quite likely that George Salmons referred to as appearing in the cast between December 2004 and 13 March 2005, and George Salmon referred to as appearing in the cast between 15 March to 19 June 2005 could be the same person, with the name misspelt in one of the programme listings.

Cast member Ray C. Evans was in the film version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Twenty nine and a half years ago, Louise Gold got her first proper grown-up acting job in a tour of Hair, whose production manager Gary Graham had played a Vulgarian child in the film version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Coincidentally, director Adrian Noble’s father and actress Louise Gold’s mother were both notable members of London’s Unity Theatre.

Christopher Biggins had also previous appeared at The London Palladium in Kids At Heart, his recording credits include Simply Musicals. He may have appeared in Dear Ralph; and he has gone on to appear in Side By Side By Sondheim 30th Anniversary Gala.

In an interview in Musical Stages (issue 46) Louise Gold and Christopher Biggins claimed to have no history of ever having worked together. However they were previously billed to appear in a one night performance of The Soap Opera. However, while Louise Gold recollects appearing in that show, Christopher Biggins it seems does not, although that show’s author Martin Yates says that he definitely did.

Tony Adams previously appeared in The Royal Variety Performance (1982).

Christopher Ryan was a member of The Young Ones, and as such he took part in Comic Relif 1986, and his recording credits include Utterly Utterly Live Comic Relief

It is not known whether or not the lighting designer Mark Henderson is the same person who helped with the production of Comic Relif 1986.

Gary Wilmot and Christopher Biggins previously appeared in Regents Park 70th Anniversary Gala.

Louise Gold and Ben Stock had previous appeared together in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Adaptation writer, the versatile Jeremy Sams has previously been musical director for a production of Assassins for which Anthony Ward also did the designs,

Jeremy Sams had also previously directed The Water Babies and Noises Off.

One songwriters Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman best known songs (not from Chitty) is It’s A Small World, which has not only been performed by The Muppets on The Muppet Show, Louise Gold also sang it in her cabaret act, LOUISE GOLD...By Appointment.

Adrian Noble previously directed Louise Gold in The Cherry Orchard.

Gillian Lynne’s many legendary choreographic credits include The Muppet Show  which Louise Gold puppeteered on; and Cats which Summer Strallen was in the last cast of.

Gillian Lynne may have previously done some choreography on Will-Aid

Andrew Bruce also worked on the sound design for the last big hit West End show that Louise Gold went into on a cast change, Mamma Mia.

Chris Walker was one of the conductors and Cole Porter - Night And Day, The Great Musicals – Laughter And Tears, and, Magic Of The Musicals.

Steve McManus’s recording credits (playing the Bass) include: Noel/Cole: Let’s Do It (Recording), Defiant Dames, and, Oliver! (Recording). He has previously appeared in A Time To Start Living, may have appeared in Comedy Tonight, and went on to appear in Happily Ever After.

Christopher Ryan and Louise Gold had previously appeared on television in Rachel And The Roarettes

Christopher Ryan had previously appeared in Alice In Wonderland, on which Louise Gold puppeteered.

Michael Broughton and Summer Strallen had previously appeared together in the Grange Park Opera production of Anything Goes.

Many years ago, back in his Crossroads days, while appearing on The Royal Variety Performance, at The London Palladium, Tony Adams accidentally kicked a chorus boy into the orchestra pit, thereafter the choreographer Alan Harding, has always referred to him as the man who kicked one of his dancers into The Palladium pit! And he isn’t the only television performer in this cast, with a story to tell about appearing in The Royal Variety Performance, at The London Palladium.

Graham Hoadly and Louise Gold had previously appeared together in Squeak! along with Brian Conley.

Gary Wilmot’s recording credits include The Greatest Musicals of the 20th Century.

Musical Stages magazine, Issue 46, Summer 2005, contains an excellent interview by editor Lynda Trapnell with Louise Gold and Christopher Biggins (along with some interruptions from Tony Adams and Freddy Lees)

Louise Gold ended her stint in the show with the end of the London Production. The show has since gone out on tour, starting with Jane Gurnett (whose previous credits include appearing with Louise Gold in: My Fair Lady and Anna Rexic & The Compulsives) in the role of The Baroness. That role has since been taken over in Bristol and Southampton by Louise Plowright (whose previous credits include heading the cast of Mamma Mia).

Ray C. Davis and Louise Gold had previously appeared together in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Norwich Production).

It is not clear whether Sound Operator Lucy Baker is the same person as that of the same name in the “With Special Thanks To” in the credits for the film Muppet Treasure Island.

It is not clear whether musician Richard Edwards is the same person as that of the same name in the children’s choir in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Reading Production).

Louise Gold spoke about her work in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on Tim McArthur Interview.

Graham Hoadly went on to appea in A Love Letter To Dan. His recording credits include The Great Musicals – Glamour And Majesty.

Isabel Wroe-Wright went on to appear at The New Ambassadors Theatre as Young Clair in Kate Betts’s play On The Third Day.

Ray C. Davis, Louise Gold, and, Scarlett Strallen have gone on to appear as members of The Company Of Mary Poppins in a late night FUNdraising special.

Scarlett Strallen, Louise Gold, Ray C. Davis, Kate Tydman, Rachel Rawlinson, Georgia Russell, Roxy Searle, James Burgess, Lawrence Michalowski, Ashley Clish, and, Jordan Belaiche went gone on to appear in Mary Poppins, which also has songs by Richard M. Sherman, and, Robert B. Sherman; and for which Andrew Bruce was the Sound Designer and Lucy Baker a Sound Operator.

Pete Walton had previously played for Anything Goes (stage show).

Summer Strallen went on to return to The London Palladium in The Sound Of Music, and to take part in the charity event Shopping With The Stars 2008.

Christopher Biggins may have previously taken part in Thing A Thon.

Jason Donovan went on to take part in Shopping With The Stars 2009.

Backstage crew members Nick Bromley, and, Miki Jablkowska had previously worked on The Pirates Of Penzance (Stage production) | The Pirates Of Penzance (Gala Performance) | The Pirates Of Penzance (Gala Preview) |The Pirates Of Penzance (Benefit Preview) |

James Burgess, Philip Catchpole, Ashley Clish, Louise Gold, George Salmon, and, Mitchell Zhangazha went on to appear in Oliver!, whose pit orchestra also included Steve McManus, and, Steve White, and on which Anthony Ward also worked.

Philip Catchpole, and, Louise Gold went on to appear in Gypsy, on which Anthony Ward, and, Mark Henderson also worked.

There seem to have been a few fairly funny goings on concerning one notable corpser  among the company, as follows:

According to cast member Miss H K-M, at one performance (sometime between March and June 2004), in the middle of the second act, out on stage Louise Gold burst out laughing, quite hysterically, and was therefore unable to deliver a key line until she eventually regained control of herself. Thus delaying the curtain-raising in the middle of the Bombe Sambe by about five minutes.

According to audience member Ms D Summer’s account (in her school’s magazine - see below) of the matinee performance on Wednesday 4 October 2004, in their big scene together, Louise Gold and Christopher Biggins managed to end up laughing at their own adlibs (having also managed to make both the audience and the pit orchestra conductor laugh)

According to audience member Mark Harrison, at the matinee performance on 20 October 2004, owing to the actions of some children in the front row of the audience, at one particular part with Christopher Biggins (presumably Chu Chi Face), Louise Gold appeared to forget her lines and place in the song; with the result that she ended the number in fits of laughter, as did the audience.

According to cast member Christopher Biggins, in his autobiography (‘Just Biggins’, see pages 252 to 254): On one occasion he, along with Louise Gold, decided to run Bombe Sambe for an extra six or seven minutes “because everyone was having such a good time”. On another occasion, while performing Chu Chi Face, Christopher Biggins lost his balance, and a crucial moment, with the result that he and Louise Gold ended up “in a tangled heap on stage”.

It is perhaps worth noting that the Musical Stages review is by their ‘Guest Critic’ Vicky Tinker, whose father reviewed such productions as: Nunsense, Ziegfeld (also at The London Palladium), The Boys From Syracuse, and, Noel/Cole: Let’s Do It.

Critics Comments

“Little disappointed in Christopher Biggins, but Louise Gold as the Baroness was sensational.” CW Review, CLUB WIZARD, 13 May 2004

“The Truly Vulgarian Christopher Biggins was surely born to play roly-poly Baron Bomburst, except that his comedy timing needs a re-tune, especially in the cod Latin American duet with Louise Gold’s camp Baroness.” Roger Foss, WHATS ON IN LONDON, 22 December 2004 - 5 January 2005.

“There was a bit of ad-libbing between Christopher Biggins and his opposite number Louise Gold, which started from her broken earring and graduated to full on messing about. Quite where the improvisation and the prepared comedy moments were divided was anyone's guess. Again, the audience went along for the ride and it was great.”  Ashley Freize Incredible.org.uk’s weblog.

“Baron and Baroness Bomburst (Christopher Biggins in a wonderful wig and the delightful hysterical Louise Gold) and their Vulgarians become true adversaries.” Viv Hardwick, NORTHERN ECHO (DARLINGTON), 9 July 2005

“The show has great songs. It has two of the most shameless old hams in the business in Christopher Biggins and Louise Gold, who play Baron (or should that be barren?) Bombast and his fishnet-stockinged wife.” Quentin Letts, DAILY MAIL/THE MAIL ON SUNDAY, 10 December 2004

“Playing the roles of Baron & Baroness Bomburst were Christopher Biggins & Louise Gold both put in great performances although it was difficult to match the power and zest of original cast members Brian Blessed and Nicola McAuliffe, however they pull it off with convincing grace.” Gary Mack, LONDON THEATRE GUIDE, April 2005

“Conley was backed up by a multi-talented and equally energetic cast. Special mention must go to Louise Gold as the wonderful Baroness; spot-on comic timing and an astounding soprano voice, and to Alvin Stardust as the wicked Childcatcher.” Donna Poynton, THEATREBUFF, 5 December 2006

“Stocky actor Christopher Biggins, who plays Baron Bomburst, and Louise Gold as his wife, Baroness Bomburst, pack the comic punches within the musical. Amazingly, they complement each other and theirs is certainly a tough act to beat.Leah Salterio, PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER, 28 March 2005

“Christopher Biggins and Louise Gold camp up a storm, as required, as Baron and Baroness Bomburst.” Mark Shenton, THE STAGE, Thursday 13 January 2005, page 8

“Louise Gold always gives excellent value in musicals: she’s talented, funny and energetic, and even redeems the gratuitous samba number, at least till the chorus get their hooves on it.” Ian Shuttleworth, SHUTTERS WEBSITE, 25 March 2004

“If I were to select my favourite performances from the show it would have to be Christopher Biggins who played Baron Bomburst and Louise Gold who played the Baroness. As a couple on stage they played off each other very well, demonstrating excellent comedy timing (especially when they started ad-libbing and made not only the audience laugh, but also the conductor of the orchestra and themselves!)”  Ms D Summer, THE SHAFTSBURY SCHOOL MAGAZINE, Issue 1 October 2004

“The highlight of the show for me has to be Christopher Biggins and Louise Gold as Baron and Baroness Bomburst. If they are not the funniest and most outrageous double act in the West End, I would love to see who could outdo them.” Vicky Tinker, MUSICAL STAGES, Issue 44 Winter 2004, page 13.
